    As far as the Hapligroup I along the Volga and Eastern Europe, keep in mind that the Mongols did a pretty good job of decimating the population, which was then backfilled by settlers from other areas after the Mongols left.

    It is nowadays known that the people considered Finns came from the central Europe. Also probably the Fenno-ugric language came from Central Europe. Not from Ural mountains. That's why Hungarian has similarities to Finnish. And also in northern Italy there is a village where they speak Finnish relate small language.

    Given that most of the info we have about Vikings was handed down by Christian monks, I don’t expect there to be much written evidence about gay Vikings. Despite that, there still triumphed the recognition of Loki’s effeminate nature and ability to give birth like a woman. That denotes that there was an ancient Nordic sense for individuals who simply did not fit gender norms. But since he was a trickster god, that could also indicate that there was a fear of people who were more gender-ambiguous.

    Since discovering Norse paganism, I've had a hard time understanding how I was supposed to "worship" so many gods. A friend of mine would always say I should pray habitually or try to allow them to come to me, but it always felt "too Christian" when I thought about it. A lot of my spiritual and magical working recently has helped disconnect from the Abrahamic worldview and focus on what paganism means to me. All that being said, this video has perfectly described what I've observed in other pagans and in myself, and has helped me even further understand my belief; fantastic work!

    I found this fascinating: Seiðr and Sidhe do share similarities, and it's plausible that the Irish word Sidhe might have been influenced by the Old Norse word Seiðr. Seiðr is an Old Norse term referring to a type of shamanic practice, magic, or divination in ancient Germanic cultures, including Scandinavia. Sidhe (also spelled Sí or Faerie) is an Irish term for supernatural beings, spirits, or ancestors, often associated with land, fertility, and the Otherworld. Although the two words have distinct meanings, linguists suggest that the Irish Sidhe might have borrowed from the Old Norse Seiðr, possibly through cultural exchange or linguistic borrowing during the Viking Age (8th-11th centuries). Some etymological connections: - Both Seiðr and Sidhe relate to concepts of spirituality, the supernatural, and the mysterious. - The Proto-Celtic word *sed- or *set- might be connected to the Old Norse Seiðr, potentially influencing the development of the Irish Sidhe. - Irish and Old Norse languages had linguistic and cultural exchange during the Viking Age, making borrowing and influence possible. While the exact relationship between Seiðr and Sidhe is unclear, it's evident that ancient European cultures shared spiritual and linguistic connections, leaving behind a rich legacy of mystical and symbolic heritage.

    This debate is very tiresome. So what if the Gods aren't as depicted literally? I don't get why that is so important to some people. I think to believe in the Gods literally is to hint at some sort of divine revelation that must have taken place at some point, because how else would we know what the Gods look like in that case? And that's a very un-pagan concept. I think the Gods are real, but logic and reason tell me that there must be only one pantheon, and each culture has their ways of interpreting and depicting the divine, and that's their right. And I'm just not arrogant enough to assume the Germanic depiction of the Gods is the sole correct one. And I don't think the pagans of antiquity and before believed that way either.

    I would presume it's not especially different to the standard humans through time. You have one or more human whos actions are worth mentioning. They get mentioned repeatedly and kind of mixed up with each other, exaggerated a bit because the history becomes a story describing the important part, not the history but the ideals. Add enough of these and you have a God, add all the Gods up and you have one God. In this sense God is like a perfect circle. Circles exist for sure but never a perfect circle..mathematically however it is "real". Regardless it describes the ideal circle by which all real world circles are judged and defined by. From my readings this is most true with odin as they would invoke Odin in a posses me type of way or having ones spirit filled with it etc etc. You could compare it (in a much lesser way) to method acting taken to the extreme. You can, at least temporarily, embody the spirit of a God allowing you to act in ways that you normally wouldn't or couldn't. You can rile yourself into a fervor with disregard for your own life. A man today with a daughter could do this by imagining a situation in which his daughter is being attacked by some bad men allowing himself to go to a very dark place. Observe if you do this the rise in heart rate and so forth. Different but similar. Imagine people a millennia ago experiencing that, even without drugs (which they had). How would you describe it if not with Gods?

    To me, Paganism is less about specific belief and minutiae, and more about your general worldview. I think the requirements to be a pagan are as follows. 1. You believe that the Divine is in everything(maybe the divine is both in everything and transcends everything, that works too). So therefore, this world is not be rejected, but embraced. Even if the world is ultimately amoral. How would we know the good if we didn't know the bad? Life-affirming values if you will. 2. You can't be an atheist. Atheistic paganism is an oxymoron, they are mutually exclusive. 3. As 1 entails, nature is divine, nature is exactly how it was meant to be, we should seek to live in accordance with nature, the more we do, the better off we are. When we deviate from our confines, bad things typically happen. 4. Things are conceptualized between order and chaos, one isn't better then the other, but a balance should be struck. Too much of anything is bad, moderation is key. And honestly, that's it. Whether you want to attempt to worship God most high as some did, or the Gods of you ancestors, is up to you. The divine is as real as you or I, but I don't think that the Gods are anthropomorphic in a literal sense. I think to believe this is to almost hint at some sort of divine revelation that must've taken place for humans to know what these Gods look like for a fact. And that's a very un-pagan conception of things.

  • @Tehz1359
    @Tehz1359 3 дня назад

    Logic and reason tells me it all comes from one source, panentheism makes the most sense to me. And I think that lines up with a pagan view. There is a sort of creative force that everything emanates from, but it's not a person, or a being. Because we already know that many old pagan religions didn't view their Gods as all-powerful. In the myths it's evident that they aren't all-powerful and aren't the first to exist. So maybe there is a God most high so to speak. That doesn't invalidate pagan Gods however, even if they are ultimately lesser Gods.

    Everyone in the comments: Remember that the Germanic peoples spent literally hundreds of years migrating southward due to various problems and pressures, and were "migrants" themselves. They would often beg and plead with Rome to be let in, run from the Huns, and "take over" in Celtic areas. Also, at the very beginning of the formation of the Germanic peoples, the earlier Corded Ware culture forced itself as "migrants" into Europe, where they fought over resources with the native Neolithic farmers. Often, maybe even most of the time, they were "unwanted" by the natives for sucking up resources and being a nuisance. There is no such thing as a "native European," unless you mean the original inhabitants from 40,000 years ago, who've been almost extinct for so long now that it's almost absurd.

      @@cmd7930 Which ancestors? The dark-skinned hunter-gatherers from 35,000 years ago? Or the farmers from the Neolithic who migrated to Europe from Anatolia? Or the Indo-Europeans, who were a combination of two groups from Western Asia who originally were nothing alike before merging? Are you aware that people like Romans and ancient Germans had no concept of a "Europe," and were constantly fighting to keep smaller tribes and groups out of "their" land? They hated each other. There was no "European unity." As far as Rome was concerned, the "developed world" was Italy, Greece, France (Gaul), Tunisia (Carthage), Egypt, Syria, and Persia. They looked down on the Germans. There were no invisible lines separating the Egyptians from the Romans, somehow making the Egyptians an "other" while Romans were conveniently placed into the same category as the Germans as being "the same" and "European." These are modern categories that are purely arbitrary and have nothing to do with tribal affiliations or genetics. Get a clue, doofus.

      @@gadpivs this can be said about all other continents but you only say it about Europeans. Jewish much? Also the hunter gatherers, neolithic farmers and Aryans are all our ancestors. We are European natives since our ancestors been living here for thousands of years. Us Europeans have ethnic, cultural and linguistic similarities that make us the natives. Also Egyptians didn’t know Africa, Persians didnt know Asia, American Indians didnt know America. I guess now none of them are native. What a nonsensical argument to make. Also both Romans and Germans share Aryan ancestry, Aryan languages and Aryan religions. Same can be said about the Celtics, Iberians, Greeks, Slavs, Baltics etc who also share these roots making them native Europeans.
